Staten Island Eateries
Finally got a good photo of Pizza Clown - 1966 to 1969 - 413 New Dorp Lane, corner of Hylan Boulevard, in New Dorp. 1970 the name had changed to Pizza Town USA.
The original Nunzio’s was established in South Beach in 1942, at what is now the corner of Sand Lane and Father Capodanno Boulevard. Nunzio moved the business in 1960 to the current location at the corner of Midland Avenue and Hylan Boulevard. “Nunzio wanted out, and he sold it (the same year) to my grandfather, Jimmy Coppolla, his son, Vincent, and Jimmy’s son-in-law, Al Bruno,” said current owner Robert Whiteaker.
For all those who remember eating at the Victory Diner on Richmond Road, below is a video of the diner being moved from its former Richmond Road (near Seaver Avenue) home to its new location at the waterfront on Father Capodanno Blvd in Ocean Breeze. The diner was saved from demolition by The Richmond County Savings Bank Foundation who put up $10,000 to buy the diner from owner and long-time cook, Maria Pappas.
And the newly created Staten Island Community Preservation Conservancy, a nonprofit established by Borough President James Molinaro and developer R. Randy Lee to preserve endangered buildings and open space, contributed the approximately $20,000 necessary to move the diner to Ocean Breeze.

Built in 1932. This wasn't the first move for this diner, the Winrock family, the original owner, relocated the restaurant in 1964 from Victory Boulevard in Castleton Corners -- thus the name Victory Diner -- to Richmond Road.
The diner was used in the filming of Easy Money with Rodney Dangerfield
(The following info was provided by Daniel Zilka, who is involved in the involved in the restoration of the former Victory Diner that is being stored at Midland Beach)
The relocation from Victory Boulevard to Richmond Road was in 1964.
It was used, for a time, as a temporary office for the Staten Island Savings Bank on Victory Boulevard.
The diner was built by the Kullman Dining Car Company of Newark, New Jersey in 1947-1950.

The Old Mill
"The Eating Place of Staten Island"
Clove Road & Hylan Blvd
In addition to the restaurant, my Dad built a miniature golf course at the intersection
of Clove Road and Hylan Boulevard circa 1930 in partnership with Tad Wright. He built a tearoom on the golf course that was very successful for several years.
When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Dad and his new partner, Michael Berardini, built the curb service addition, a cocktail lounge and banquet hall, an enlarged dining room as well as a dance floor out back featuring live bands.
R&H beer was served at the curb and at tables on the former golf course terraces.
As you may recall, the restaurant burned down in 1957 and my Dad passed away in 1958 as we were planning to rebuild.
Sincerely,
Dick Boera

Al Deppe's
For all you Native Islanders that remember Al Deppes Corner
Here is a cool story, given to me by the Elks Club
In the 1930s, the late Al Deppe one of Staten Island's best known restaurateurs, bought the house (where the Elks Club is now). Deppe installed a bar and converted an adjoining enclosed porch into a cocktail lounge. He also built a 200-foot tunnel between the house and his famous restaurant across the street so that he can safely carry the day's receipts from the restaurant to his home. The lodge made the Richmond Avenue mansion their fifth home on Staten Island after purchasing it in 1960.
